Have you heard? The suit is back and, it’s wilder and weirder—and arguably more stylish—than ever before. Whether it’s the classic-yet-modern style of folks like Ralph Lauren and Sid Mashburn or something drapey from Dries Van Noten or Rick Owens, men are wearing suits with newfound zest. Leave it to Drake to take a page from menswear’s adventurous most adventurous suit-wearers and smash it with his own unexpected vibe: the turtleneck sweater. It’s a style move he pulled at the Grammy Awards back in February—and by the looks of it, he will continue to do so as we head into fall.
Earlier this week, at the London premiere of the recently revived British television series Top Boy, Drake dressed up from his usual wardrobe of lavish tracksuits and Raptors jerseys with a sharp sartorial look. The rapper wore a charcoal grey two-piece Tom Ford suit and completed his outfit with a similarly shaded turtleneck sweater and glossy black Chelsea boots. And, of course, a Drake-grade iced-out chain. The head-to-toe look is quintessential Drake: plenty cool, and maybe the tiniest bit corny, but even more lovable for its. The boots and chain make the sometimes-dull grey suit feel fresh and exciting, and the turtleneck adds a jolt of modern sophistication without being too stuffy.
We’re not going to pretend that the turtleneck-and-suit combo is for everyone. For some, the turtleneck sweater feels too serious and throwing a blazer and dress pants certainly doesn’t make things feel more casual. But when that cold snap of autumn rolls in, your attitude on the classic turtleneck might change. (Or perhaps an excellent mock-neck sweater is more your speed.) So if you find yourself with an occasion than calls for a suit this fall, take a move from Drake’s playbook and wear one with your best turtleneck sweater. Consider the shiny bling optional.
