Twenty years have passed ever since the release of Oops!… I Did It Again, which was the second studio album of Britney Spears, the pop princess. On the famed record, she also churned out the “stronger” and “lucky.” These were the biggest heats in her album. However, she lodged the memories of her fans with her lead single, which was very ear-worming. The music video is iconic, and if you think of her, you just the red latex jumpsuit. For the anniversary of the album, Vogue called up the stylist of her video, Estee Stanley, to recall the costume.
Stanley has styled the hottest pop artists, including Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray, and *NSYNC. She was the one responsible for the styling of the videos of the boy band, that is “It’s Gonna Be Me” and “Bye Bye Bye.” Furthermore, she also teamed earlier with Nigel Dick, the director of the music video. It is through this connection that Stanley ended up getting the job. In the meantime, Spears was also in a relationship with Justin Timberlake, the heartthrob of *NSYNC.
Working together with Spears, Stanly crafted the fashion vision for the space-age theme of the video. Stanley said, ” We wanted everything to be sexy and monochromatic.” The outfits for spears were all-black and all-white, and for the backup dancers, Stanley thought of a shiny look. The hulky space boyfriend, on the other hand, had an astronaut costume.
However, arriving on a better choice for Spears’ main outfit was not an easy task. They felt that the red catsuit was not that satisfying. They sought assistance from Michael Bush, Spears’ custom designer, who was responsible for her custom tour looks. Stanley says,” It was a last-minute thing to go to him and see if he could make something for us. In [the music] world, everybody has to do everything in two minutes, so we knew he could pull it off. And he did.”
Bush ended up getting the work done overnight, and he came up with the red latex suit. Although Stanley initially had some feeling about the clingy material, it was a perfect one for Spears. Stanley says,” If you put a latex outfit on, you’re immediately sweating, and I knew she was going to be dancing all day. I was nervous that she would pass out.” He then continued,” After one take, I unzipped her, and it looked like a bucket of water poured out of this jumpsuit. She had a very intense day, to say the least.”
Another intense day was the shooting day. There is a scene where the camera was pointing at Spears while she was lying down. There is an incident where she was hit on the back of the head the camera, but she still went on with the performance.
Stanley said that she had a wonderful and wild moment during the period when she was working with Spears. She says she admires her creativity. Stanley said,” Even with her little school girl outfit[from ‘Baby One More Time’], she’s set a precedented for always coming out in something very memorable,”
